Tunga River

About:

The river is famous for the sweetness of its water. There is a belief that " Thunga panam Ganga snanum" which means we should drink the water of river thunga and take bath in river Ganga. It has a dam built across it at Gajanur, and a larger dam has been built across the compound Tungabhadra river at Hospet.

The Tunga River is an important river flowing in the southern state of India, Karnataka. The river originates in the Western Ghats on a hill called Varaha Parvata. The birthplace of Tunga is called Gangamoola, which is a cave inside Varaha Parvatha. It is believed that Tunga River was born when Varaha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu perforated the earth with his tusk.

Other than the Chikmagalur and the Shimoga district, the river also flows through the district of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. There is a dam built across the Tunga River at Gajanur, a small village in Shimoga district of Karnataka. There is a larger dam built across the Tungabhadra River at Hospet.

Shringeri a town located in the Chikmagalur district on the banks of the Tunga River has several temples. The Sarada Temple and the Vidyasankara Temple are the most temples on the bank of the Tunga.

The birthplace of Tunga is called the Ganga Moola, a cave inside the Varaha Parvatha (mountain). With a length of about 147 km, it combines with the Bhadra River to form the Tungabhadra River. On the banks of the river, in Sringeri, lies the famous Shri Sharadha Madira. Gajanur (Tunga) is an s-shaped dam constructed over the river.

Shopping:-Many shops at Shivamogga's widely laid boulevards are a Shoppers paradise. The Nehru Avenue[Road],B.H Road, Durgigudi,Bala Raj urs Road Shivappanayaka Market, Gandhi Bazaar are the major commercial centres of Shivamogga. Cloth and other related items like dresses, saaris etc., are available at cheaper rates than other places. Most of those, though not of international recognition are of very good quality.

There is no shortage of temples at Shivamogga though there only a few large, quiet and magnificent temples. The Guddekal temple, Kote anjeneya temple, Bheemeshwara temple, Mailareshwara temple, Ramana Shreshti park Ganesha Temple, Ravindra Nagar Prasanna Ganesha Temple,Laxmi temple(vinobanagar) Shankar Mutt are notable ones and Basaveshwara tample in gandhi bazar, shivalaya near park, veerabhadreshwara temple in chowki matt are religious centres.

Many Mosques are present at Shivamogga. One near the Railway station, another at Mahavir Circle, one at Tank mohalla are the notable ones.one is in ameer ahamed circle and millaghatta sunni gousia masjid and many more The Sacred Heart Cathedral church is touted as the second largest Church in Asia. The other churches are the Ragigudda church, the Sharavathi Nagar Church and the Sagar road church.

Local Attractions in the City:- The city has a large spacious park called the Gandhi park where a toy train and an aquarium is housed. Nearby is the Kuvempu Rangamandira & Ambedkar Bhavan where frequent cultural programmes are held. The Shivappanaika palace provides a historical touch to the city. The old Tunga Bridge which is more than a 100 years old was commissioned and supervised by Bharat Ratna Sir M Vishveshwaraiah. Many more attractions attract tourits to the city.

"Chibbalagude", Thirthahalli, The famous place for Siddivinayaka temple & Fish in tunga river, (like Shringeri). For all these places, one should find rooms in Shimoga or Sagar only, as other places are almost villages. "Shiva Statue" made of concrete is installed at Harakere, near Shivamogga looks good. "Sacred Heart Cathedral", the second biggest church in Asia, is situated in the center of the city.
Lion safari is 6 km from Shimoga. Safari drives are conducted in cage vans to get closer glimpse of wild animals.

There's plenty of rustic scenes here - from the refreshing natural sight of Tunga River with some children playing and jumping off a cliff (as tall as a 2-storey house) and into the cascading water below to women washing laundry along the river banks. Perfect to get back to nature.
