About:

Varada River, the only source of water for the Sagar town, is the major river of Shimoga District. Sagar is an industrial town in the heart of the Western Ghats, Sagar is located in Shimoga District of Karnataka. It is 75 km north-west of Shimoga. The river originates from Vardamoola, which is about 6 km from Sagar town. It flows through the Western Ghats and enters the central districts of Karnataka (Haveri and Bellary). The river joins the Tungabhadra river at Galaganath. The river flows eastwards through Uttara Kannada District and Haveri District and joins the Tungabhadra. There are many big and small shrines on the banks of the river.

It is important to the the wellbeing of the kannada people along its course. Dams have been constructed along the river's course, providing water for irrigation and domestic purposes during summer. There are, however, no major irrigation projects on this river, although the government is considering a major irrigation project on this river.

About Simoga: Shimoga District is located centrally in Karnataka. 'Shimoga' means 'face of Shiva'. It is blessed with nature's bounty - landscapes dotted with waterfalls, swaying palms, and lush paddy fields. Shimoga is spread over an area of 10,550 sq km. Shimoga is the district headquarters. Shimoga district is also known as the Rice Bowl of Karnataka state.

Major rivers such as Tunga, Bhadra, and Varada run through Shimoga. The district is rich in flora and fauna, and dense forests. The jungles are the main producers of sandalwood, rosewood, teak and other exotic timber. Mango, jackfruit, and tamarind are grown. Wild animals such as elephant, tiger, lion, leopard, wild boar, bear, antelope, bison, porcupine, monkeys, and wolves are found in the dense forests.

Agriculture and animal husbandry are the major factors contributing to the economy of Shimoga District. Good quality paddy, coconut, ragi, pepper, areca and sugarcane are cultivated. There are 3 hydro-electric power projects.

The tourist attractions are Jog Falls, Vanake-Abbey Falls, Achakanya Falls, Hidlamane Falls, Tunga Dam, B R P Dam, Kodachadri, Kundadri, Honnemaradu, Tyarekoppa Lion Safari, Sakrebayalu Elephant Camp, Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, Gudavi Bird Sanctuary and Ballegavi.

History:

Shimoga is steeped in history; it was the stronghold of the erstwhile Keladi Nayaks in the 16th century. Marathas invaded and plundered the town in 1798. It came under the British rule in the early 19th century.

Interesting things to do:

The place is famous for its ivory and sandalwood industries. The town also has an artisan-training center run by the government.

Interesting things to Visit:

Places of tourist interest include the Siddhi Vinayaka temple, Durga temple and Ikkeri. The Gudigara Co-operative Society showroom is also worth a peep. Also in the town are the Shimoga fort, Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Government Museum. Gajanur (10 km), the "steel city" of Bhadravathi (18 km), Mandagadde Natural Bird Sanctuary and Tavarekoppa are other places worth visiting in the vicinity.
