History of Rewa:

The district derives its name from Rewa town, the district headquarters, which is another name for Narmada river. The district with present boundary came into existence in 1950 after the promulgation of the Provinces and states (Transfer of ENCLAVES) order 1950. Prior to August 1947 the district along with the Raghurajnagar tahsil of the erstwhile Rewa state correspended to the north Rewa district of that state . The territones now included in the district were held by the imperral Maurya dynasty which ruled in the 3rd century B.C. In the advent of the Kalchurls from the 9th to the end of 12th century. The Baghela king driven eastwards by Ulugh Khan , brother of the emperor Alauddin in the 13th century appeared in this Baghela kings till the abdication of the Crown by the last successor of the dynasty, Martand Singh.after the country became independent, the Rewa ruler accede to the Union of India. The present Rewa district came into existence in 1950 .

The Rajas of Rewa were Rajputs of the Baghela branch of the Solanki or Chalukya clan, and claimed descent from the founder of the Anhilwara (Patan) dynasty in Gujarat. They ruled from Bandhavgarh under the first ruler Raja Vyaghradev who was direct descendant of famous Gujarati King and Warrior Vir Dhawal . The state came under British paramountcy in 1812 and remained a princely state within the Raj until India's independence in 1947.

In 1901, the population of the state was 1,327,385, showing a decrease of 12% over a decade; the population of the town that year was 24,608. Many of the inhabitants of the hilly tracts were Gonds and Kols. The estimated revenue of the state was Rs.200,000/- p.a. The staple crops were rice, millets and wheat. More than one-third of the area was covered with forests, yielding timber and lac. The state suffered from famine in 1896-1897 and again (to a lesser extent) in 1899-1900.

During the long minority of Raja Venkat Raman Singh (b.1876, ruled 1880-1918), the administration of the state was reformed. In 1901 the town boasted a high school, a "model jail" and two hospitals: the Victoria hospital and the Zenana hospital. However, it was still adjudged among the most backward areas of the country by V.P. Menon, after he visited the state in 1947.

The first white tiger to be captured was not, as is often claimed, the famed Mohan. In December 1915, still a full thirty-six years prior to the capture of Mohan, Maharajah Gulab Singh of Rewa caught a white cub. At the time of capture it was approximately two-years-old and lived in captivity at the Maharajah's summer palace for another five years. The tiger was then stuffed and sent as a gift to King George V as a sign of India's loyalty to the crown. To this day white tigers are still kept at the Maharajah's summer palace which is located at Govindgarh.

In May 1951, Maharajah Shri Martand Singh was hunting in the jungles of Bandhavgarh. On 25th of May a report came that a tigress had been sighted with four cubs, one of which was white. The tigress was shot and this was followed by two of her four cubs. More by luck than planning the white cub escaped. Rules of the time allowed the shooting of a tigress with cubs and this was very common. The cub was captured and placed in Maharajah's 150-roomed palace in a large open courtyard. On the 30th May, only three days after its capture, the white cub escaped and a long hunt was organised to try and recover it. The white cub was reintroduced to a repaired courtyard where he was to live for the remainder of his life. This tiger was the famed Mohan.
