Panshet - River Mutha

About:

Panshet is a dam about 50 km southwest of the city of Pune in western India. Along with two other dams nearby (including Khadakwasla), it supplies drinking water to the city of Pune. Panshet is famous due to the disaster on 12 July 1961 when the dam wall burst, causing massive flooding in the city of Pune.Although this caused a significant loss of property, there was little to no loss of human life. Other sources say there were between 1000 and 2000 casualties.

Panshet lake is famous picnic spot. This Lake is nested in the lap of Sahyadri mountain ranges, and surrounded by lush green hills streaked with numerous waterfalls.Panshet Lake is formed by the backwater of the Panshet Dam.From here we can see high hills of Sahyadri mountains. Some hills are 3800 feet high.

Panshet is Chowpati of Pune. Daily thousands of people visit this picnic, many people enjoy their Sunday and holiday evenings here.Sinhgad fort, Khadakwasla Dam and Varasgaon are the famous attractions near Panshet Lake.

Panshet dam was built in late 50's. In 1961 Panshet dam collapsed and entire Pune city was gabbed by water.

Bhatgar Dam
It is only 40 km from Pune. Bhatgar Dam is the highest river dam wall in India, which is built on river Velvandi, Bhatgar Dam. Fun lovers often visit the dam. Government buses are available between Pune and Bhatgar Dam.

Pimpri Chinchwad
Chinchwad is about 15 km away from Pune, Maharashtra. It is an old town, and one can find its references in Shivaji's and Peshwa's periods.

Raigad
Raigad was the capital of the Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Britishers named it 'Gibralter of the East' as the well-fortified structure atop a hill that had repeatedly defied attackers. Shivaji built the fort in the 14th century. Chit Darwaja, also known as Jit Darwaja is at the foothills near village Pachad.

Khoob Ladha Buruj is a strategically located tower, from where any attacker from both the side could be defended. Maha Darwaja is at a distance of nearly a mile ahead after a difficult climb. This 350 years-old main entrance to the fort stands so majestically. Mena Darwaja is a special entrance for the royal ladies and the queens.
